The story follows Telly Paretta (Julianne Moore), a grief-stricken mother undergoing therapy to deal with the loss of her young son. When her therapist claims that Paretta actually never had a son and that she's unconsciously fabricated all her memories, Paretta is aghast; when she meets another, similarly grieving patient (Dominic West) with the same situation, however, she begins an investigation, trying to uncover the truth.
